An educational international experience: Two weeks at GEZE Asia Pacific
Leandro Cerqueira Karst started his dual studies programme at GEZE in Leonberg in October of 2019. To complete his Bachelor's thesis, however, he ended up abroad: In an interview, he reports on his experiences in Singapore with GEZE Asia Pacific.
Hello Leandro, thank you for telling us about your experience. How did you decide to go abroad?
Unfortunately, my semester abroad at Edinburgh Napier University (Scotland) was all online due to the pandemic. Because of this, I wanted to try again and researched a global topic for my Bachelor’s thesis. Alongside HR employees from GEZE, I then looked for opportunities that would allow me to work abroad. I chose Singapore – which was a real adventure for me!

What exactly did you do at GEZE Asia Pacific?
The topic of my Bachelor’s thesis was internationalisation in project management. Since my focus was on GEZE Asia Pacific, I was able to spend two weeks in Singapore. There, I analysed processes and toured properties and building sites. I also held workshops. I also spoke with a large number of employees, on site as well as online. Afterwards, I summarised the results and developed recommendations for action.
How did you like your time in Singapore?
I lived near the lively Clarke Quay district, which has a lot of restaurants, in a 1-room apartment. However, I mainly used it just for sleeping: On the evenings and weekends I toured Singapore, such as the Gardens by the Bay and the Arts House. I also took part in a boot camp with colleagues and expats who worked in other companies and got to know the city.

How significant were the cultural differences?
My colleagues in Singapore were very friendly: They often brought me culinary delicacies to try out. Singapore is a modern and dynamic place – the economy has been booming for years. However, people rarely go home right at the end of the work day. They usually work into the evenings. It was always very important for my colleagues to deliver good performance.
Singapore and GEZE Asia Pacific are very diverse. It is a place where different cultures and religions meet. However, this diversity is also a strength. I learned about the customs and traditions of the area before my departure at the Dual University and in the company.
Why is contact with subsidiaries so important?
It is thousands of kilometres from Leonberg to Singapore. Despite being there for just a short time, I saw myself as an ambassador between two cultures. Close collaboration is essential to understand the work and conditions the other person is dealing with, and to uphold our promises to our customers around the world.
Was your trip worth it?
Absolutely! For GEZE, as well as for me personally! I learned a lot about product management in the context of global and intercultural challenges. I also learned a lot about the relevance of digital structures in the international sphere. This has long-term benefits for me – as well as for GEZE.
